Industry workers in Brisbane’s southern suburbs have the opportunity to participate in a defensive driving course from 9-13 July to equip them with safety tips and techniques for driving in the event of a flood.

RACQ is delivering the one-day nationally accredited course through Reserve Training and Safety to members of the manufacturing industry in flood prone areas across Queensland.

The latest round of one-day courses will be held at RACQ’s headquarters at Eight Mile Plains.

Participants are only required to pay a small contribution towards the total cost, as the course is subsidised under the Queensland Natural Disasters Jobs and Skills Package, a joint Queensland and Australian Government initiative.

RACQ’s Executive Manager Driver Education, Scott Lewin, said participants would learn the techniques and strategies required to drive safely in diverse environments.

“The course combines theory with on-road coaching and evaluation designed to help participants identify high-risk driving practices and adopt the necessary behaviour and techniques to maximise their safety in dangerous circumstances,” Mr Lewin said.

“Brisbane residents are all too familiar with the hazards created by floods so we are keen to train as many motorists as possible about the best driving practices and behaviour to adopt in the event of a natural disaster.”

Mr Lewin said the course was designed to help participants understand and develop:

• Practical on-road hazard perception and risk awareness
• Responsibilities imposed by Workplace Health and Safety Legislation
• Fatigue safety management
• Safe driving techniques
• Skills and behaviour to minimise crash risks.

The one-day course is being offered in multiple day segments in nine flood-prone locations across Queensland – including Toowoomba, Ipswich, Dalby, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Roma, south Brisbane and north Brisbane.

“Participants will come away from the course with a greater understanding of driving in a variety of environments, with a set of skills and techniques to help them avoid dangerous situations,” Mr Lewin said.
