Tyre Rotation

tyre_off

Front and rear tyres do different jobs so they usually wear at different rates. Some tyres transmit drive, others steer and in some cases they do both. Their share of cornering and braking loads varies also. So regular tyre rotation is needed to ensure maximum life and help even out any uneven wear patterns. So whats the correct way to rotate radial tyres?

Moving the tyres front to rear on the same side only used to be the recommendation. But these days, putting a diagonal move, such as left front to right rear and left rear to right front, into the rotation pattern is perfectly acceptable, unless they are uni-directional tyres. Then the old fore and aft rule still applies. When bringing the spare into the sequence, it will often be put on the front axle.

But the exact rotation pattern and where the spare goes (if its being included), will all depend on the exact wear patterns and relative amounts of tread. So consult a professional and always have the wheels re-balanced at the same time.
