Toyota is no stranger to 4WD awards and this year it produced another winner, its 2003 model Prado GXL.
While the revised Prado scored strongly in most areas, it impressed the judges with its car-like ride and smoothness and quietness (the petrol model particularly), and its capable handling on the road.
Engine performance was a highlight.
On the bitumen, the new quad cam, V6, petrol engine proved to be a sweet spinner. It was smooth, responsive and flexible throughout the rev range, and the electronic, four-speed auto was a classy performer.
Its brethren, the turbo-diesel powerplant, was at its best off road, providing plenty of low-down torque for crawling and climbing, and good engine-braking during descents.
Off the beaten track, the full-time 4WD Prado makes easy work of tough tasks. It offers 220 mm of ground clearance, good approach and departure angles, a user-friendly system for switching between high and low range and a lockable, torque-sensing, limited slip, centre differential.
Prado also scored top marks for seat comfort and yielded a swag of above average ratings across the other seven areas assessed under design and function, including space, practicality and ergonomics. The V6 engine also meets the tougher Euro III emission standards.
It was a solid performer in the value for money stakes too, the petrol version having an advantage in running and repair costs, and the turbo-diesel achieving better fuel consumption. The Prado also ranked highly for its solid depreciation performance.
Toyota also took third place with its 4.7-litre, V8 LandCruiser GXL.
The ‘Cruiser’ was a dynamo off-road and also matched the Prado’s scores for design and function. However, it rated poorly for fuel consumption and its higher purchase price also conspired to keep it off the top of the podium.
Final Scores (Out of 5): Prado td 4.00, Prado ptl 3.99, LandCruiser 3.83.
