Talk about being pipped at the post. Holden’s evergreen Astra looked set to take its fourth successive crown before Subaru unveiled a shock strategy in the run to the line.
Right on deadline for the 2003 awards, Subaru slashed $2000 from most normally aspirated Impreza prices, which clinched a tight contest against the legendary Lion.
Although the segment’s overall price cut-off lifted for 2003, vehicle purchase price is still critical for consumers and it was the deciding factor in the reduced-cost Impreza’s victory.
Impreza rates highly on retained value, as well as providing a good level of engine performance, road grip, build quality and standard features.
Much of Impreza's prowess in the handling department comes courtesy of its all-wheel-drive system, though this in turn contributes to its average rating for fuel economy.
While a number of cars in this category posed a threat to Astra’s record run, only the Impreza offered the right formula for success.
Though relieved of its crown, the Astra City is by no means disgraced. In fact Astra, as in past years, performs consistently across the 19 judging criteria. However, it trailed the Impreza on standard features, safety, braking, ergonomics and comfort.
Holden’s engine performance matches the Subaru, and on ride and handling the foes couldn’t be split. In the case of the latter, the Astra performs extremely well against its all-wheel-drive rival.
Toyota Corolla Ascent also finished in the top three, beating off stiff competition from other promising starters such as the VW Golf Generation, Ford Focus CL, Hyundai Elantra and Peugeot 307 XS.
The ever-reliable Corolla achieved average or above average scores in all but two of the 19 criteria, with its main strengths retained value, comfort, space, practicality, ergonomics and build quality.
Corolla was also acknowledged for its driving qualities, with performance, ride, handling and smoothness and quietness all above the norm.
Final Scores (Out of 5): Impreza 3.67; Astra 3.61; Corolla 3.38.
