Story by Jim Mathers
This class proved an interesting contest, with two newcomers, Subaru's 3.0-litre Liberty R and Peugeot's long-awaited 407 throwing down the gauntlet to 2003-winner, the Honda Accord V6.
But last year's ABC quiet achiever, the six-cylinder Accord, came up trumps again.
The Accord V6 is a surprising package. It offers plenty of comfort, practicality and performance for much less money than most of its competitors.
In fact, with a price tag of less than $40,000, it must be amongst the best value-for-money offerings currently available across the entire new car market.
The good thing about this car is that it's consistent across all areas. A strong performer in the value-for-money stakes, it leads the class in the areas of pricing and depreciation. But it also fares very well in running and repair costs.
Inside, the V6 Accord oozes quality. It offers very good build quality, plenty of passenger and luggage space, comfortable seats, and probably the best ergonomics of any car on the market (along with its Euro stablemate).
