Best Prestige Car

Buyers in the Prestige category expect a certain level of refinement and luxury trappings and, in Lexus tradition, the IS250 doesn’t disappoint.

This category was one of the most closely fought. The Lexus just pipped the Subaru Liberty 3.0R, with better marks for fuel economy, warranty, security, environment and build quality. It also excelled on ride and smoothness and quietness.

You’d expect plenty of bells and whistles, but the 13-speaker sound system, power-operated, fold-away exterior mirrors and keyless entry/ignition are bonuses.

Passengers might also be impressed by the considerable safety features, tasteful interior and ergonomic excellence.

The IS250 is not the strongest performer, but the 2.5-litre V6 – lighter and more advanced than the old Lexus sixes – is among the most refined and eco-friendly in this segment.

Peak power and torque arrive late in the rev range, so for best results employ the fully manual sequential mode in the excellent six-speed auto.

Lexus offers a relatively supple ride, without compromising handling. The speed-sensitive, electric, power steering can take some getting used to but it is good.

The car’s major weakness is size, with limited rear seat space.

There were some impressive and desirable new entrants in this category, but the IS250’s consistency across most criteria, the critical ones especially, gave Lexus a deserved victory.
