Best Recreational 4WD

During the seven years that the Subaru Forester has fronted the Australia’s Best Cars judges, it has claimed the distinction of five class wins.

After successive titles from 2000 to 2003, it lost its crown in 2004 and 2005, but refinement of the scoring system and consumer weightings have handed it another title this year.

Forester’s strength is its car-like feel and handling, the latter thanks to a low centre of gravity.

Despite these qualities, Forester isn’t short-changed off-road. Its light weight allows it to ride over, rather than plough through sand, compared with some larger four-wheel-drive opposition.

Forester rates strongly on standard features, security, safety, depreciation, economy, comfort and practicality.

It has the manoeuvrability of a smaller car – not surprising, as it is built on the Impreza platform – and a seat height that is more easily negotiated than many of its rivals.

Manual versions have dual range for off-road exploits and a hill-holder facility makes it easier to take off on hills.

Although all-wheel-drive systems provide stable handling, it is a pity that Subaru doesn’t offer an electronic stability control option in Forester.

Forester’s ergonomics are fine, however steering- wheel-mounted audio controls and a reach- adjustable steering column would be appreciated. It is also modest on space, however the cargo area can be expanded with a 60/40 split-fold rear seat.

The Forester is a great lifestyle vehicle for smaller families, as it offers sedan-like manners around town and 4WD functionality, without the expense of high fuel consumption.
