At $22,990, the VW Polo TDI seems an awkward fit for such a budget-conscious category, but this turbo-diesel hatch’s struggle on value stands in stark contrast to its upside on performance and economy.

The diesel-powered, five-speed, manual Polo TDI represents the bottom rung on the diesel ladder.

While all Polos appeal in terms of design, build quality and a superb ride and handling package, only the larger capacity 1.9-litre TDI offers performance and fuel economy advantages that upset the established order.

The Polo TDI engine is unobtrusive, although there is still more cabin noise than in some quieter petrol rivals.

This is a solidly built little car with impressive fit and finish, high levels of equipment and reassuring security. A downside is that there is no automatic version.

The ergonomics are straightforward.

Space is about average for the class, however the five-door shape makes rear seat access a breeze.

It’s a surprise to find that Polo TDI is a better prospect for such ongoing expenses as servicing and insurance than some popular Japanese rivals.

The well-rounded VW Polo TDI has a steep purchase price and, admittedly, will not suit everyone.

That’s why ABC publishes comprehensive scoring tables. Buyers can easily compare alternatives in the class to find cars that suit their individual needs and budgets.
