Luxury sports cars aren’t for everyone; firstly, because of the price and, secondly, the performance focus often results in occupant comfort and city driveability being compromised.

Not so the Audi TTS.

It might not have the muscle-straining cornering grip, neck-wrenching acceleration or retinal-bulging braking of the new Nissan GTR, but the TTS does have the best overall package that allows for both fun and function in a sports car.

Where the Audi TTS emphatically nails it and maintains the high ground on the others is in value for money and design and function, though it doesn’t fare so well in the list of standard features.

The TTS’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine is the smallest capacity in the class but, coupled with a lightweight body, provides enough ‘oomph’ to have the TTS whistling up to 100 km/h in just over five seconds.

This isn’t just due to a freely spinning engine but also the result of a quick-shifting, six-speed, DSG, clutchless, manual transmission and legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system that gets the power to the ground.

The ride and handling is managed by Audi’s magnetic ride adaptive damping system that electronically controls the flow properties of the fluid in the shock absorbers instantly.

The TTS does all of this while still achieving the best fuel consumption in the class.
