Holden Epica 2007 - 2011
April 2012
The rising popularity of mid-size cars with buyers eager to downsize, and Holden once again looking to its Korean affiliations for product cheaper than that previously sourced from GM’s European divisions helped spawn Epica. It was based on an elderly Daewoo model and effectively replaced the Holden Vectra.
Mitsubishi CJ Lancer, 2007 onwards
February 2012
On the local scene, the Lancer nameplate goes back to the mid-seventies. From the Land of The Rising Sun, it wore American maker Chrysler’s badges back then. It was a portent of things to come though, with Japanese cars to soar in popularity and Lancer’s maker, Mitsubishi, eventually consuming Chrysler Australia.
Hyundai Getz 1.5
January 2012
Korean car maker Hyundai has been a dominant force in the competitive small car market, with the popular Excel one of the company’s best-remembered offerings.
Hyundai i30, 2007 onwards
October 2011
Value for money has long been the Korean maker’s strong suit. But the i30 was arguably the first model that really had all the necessary aces up its sleeve to be considered a worthy all-round package. It confirmed the brand’s maturity and has snatched a hat-trick of class wins in Australia’s Best Cars awards.
Volkswagen Jetta, 2006 - 2009
July 2011
There’s a new generation Jetta nearly here, (Note: the new model arrived in mid 2011). But the Jetta nameplate arrived in our market in early 2006. It was VW’s new mid-size sedan based on Golf V, quickly leading to the now clichéd description of Jetta as nothing more than “a Golf with a boot”. Jetta replaced the earlier and unloved Bora.
