The Decade of Action for Road Safety is a United Nations initiative being led internationally by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and supported by the Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA) Foundation, of which RACQ is a constituent member.
The Decade of Action for Road Safety has been created because currently more than 1.3 million people die every year due to road traffic injuries around the world and by 2020 it is predicted that this figure will grow to 1.9 million deaths unless we all take decisive action.
In March 2010 a United Nations General Assembly resolution proclaimed a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 with the goal of stabilising and then reducing the forecasted level of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at national, regional and global levels.
Australia is a signatory to the resolution, and your Club, the RACQ, is committed to helping Queensland make a contribution towards achieving the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
Launching the Decade
RACQ was involved in the Queensland launch of the Decade on 11 May 2011 in partnership with other local organisations committed to a continued effort to improve road safety in Queensland. These include the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Queensland Police Service, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland, ARRB and Leighton’s.
As part of the international effort to draw attention to the commencement of the Decade, the symbol of the Decade was projected onto City Hall and King George Square in Brisbane on the night of 10 May 2011.

V8 Supercars Heroes Challenge
RACQ, in partnership with the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) and V8 Supercars Australia, is also pleased to be involved with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Action for Road Safety campaign and the V8 Supercars Heroes Challenge.
FIA Action for Road Safety is a new global campaign aligning with the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. RACQ and CAMS, as members of the FIA, are working together with V8 Supercars Australia to raise awareness about the importance of road safety.
The new V8 Supercars Heroes Challenge Facebook game requires players to select their team – Ford or Holden – and perform a range of general safety and maintenance activities as quickly and accurately as possible. The leader board will keep track of who is achieving the best times, including a Holden versus Ford summary, to show who has ultimate bragging rights.
