Animals are unpredictable and this can be a problem when driving. When travelling in areas where animals are likely to be on the road, extra care and attention is required.
If possible, you should avoid driving at night and during dawn and dusk periods as wildlife congregates at roadside vegetation to feed during these periods. Water crossings, eg. creeks and rivers, are other areas where drivers should be cautious of stock and animals. In rural areas, unfenced cattle are common and are a danger at any time. These factors should be taken into account when planning the final destination for each day.
Night time creates an additional problem when the headlights of an oncoming vehicle may cause an animal to panic and freeze in the middle of the road. As well, some animals may be harder to see at night due to their colour. You should make allowances for these factors and slow down, particularly along roads with yellow warning signs with a silhouette of an animal.
