Driving is a complex task, which places varying demands on the driver according to different environments. How drivers behave can have a dramatic effect on reactions from other road users. Care, courtesy and awareness are very important attributes of a safe driver.
Queensland motorists now have access to a police-operated service which could help reduce hooning, road rage, speeding in neighbourhoods and other bad driving behaviour. The state’s police service has established a database-driven Traffic Complaints System, which will track public complaints about road users and prompt police action to address these complaints.
Television is an effective medium to influence and educate drivers. However there is a growing concern about some of the ways in which advertisers are depicting unsafe road user behaviour to sell products, especially vehicles and motoring products. The concerns centre on contradictory messages about speed, driver concentration and safe driving in general. The voluntary code developed by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has been far from effective in addressing these concerns.
