Red light cameras are cameras located at signalised intersections that automatically take photographs of the rear of vehicles that do not stop behind the white stop line when faced with a red traffic light.
Red light cameras will not take photographs of vehicles that travel over the stop line when faced with green or yellow traffic lights.
Red light cameras are mounted on poles, a number of metres back from the intersection.
If a vehicle passes over the stop line after the light has turned red, it will be photographed immediately and then one second later. These photographs are then viewed by police officers at the Traffic Camera Office to determine whether or not an offence was committed.
The Traffic Camera Office is provided with details including time, date, lane position and the amount of time the light was red on the photographs.
Red light cameras are primarily located at intersections that have a history of crashes (at least five in five years) caused by drivers failing to stop at red lights.
Red light cameras are, similarly to fixed speed cameras, prioritised for installation by calculating crash severity scores using the Estimated Property Damage Only (EPDO) method. The EPDO method is a point-based system aimed at allocating cameras to the zones with more frequent and severe crashes.
