5. How long should my car battery last?

This figure can vary due to many factors including:

- the initial construction of the battery

- how often the vehicle is used,
- if the vehicle has been maintained, and
- if the battery has been maintained.

All RACQ Batteries are guaranteed for the term of the warranty.

6. What should I do if my battery is diagnosed as flat?

Normal driving will not restore the battery to a reliable level of charge.  The battery should be placed on the appropriate battery charger, a discharged battery can take up to 48 hours to recharge.

7. What is a deep cycle battery?

Deep cycle batteries are designed to be discharged over many cycles (discharged and recharged=one cycle) without effecting the battery life as they generally have thicker plates to reduce plate buckling. They are common in motor homes, caravans, marine and fork lifts, these batteries are rated in Amp hours.

8. What is a calcium battery?

A calcium component is added to both the positive and negative plates; this reduces water loss through gassing and allows the container to be sealed and maintenance free.  More and more modern cars are using these type of batteries to combat higher power demands by the vehicle as they are less likely to be effected by extreme heat and higher charge rates.

9. What is a sealed battery?

This means the battery is sealed during manufacture and doesn't have provision to add distilled water to the cells. Most Calcium/Calcium batteries are sealed and are 'maintenance free' with minimal or reduced fluid loss due to gassing, the fluid level under normal conditions will last for the life cycle of the battery.

10. What does CCA mean?

CCA is the recognised industry standard for rating a batteries performance,  the higher the CCA the more powerful the battery. The more accessories and power consumed by the vehicle  a higher CCA battery is recommended.

AGM or Absorbed Glass Mat batteries differ from traditional wet filled product in that they are fully sealed. They use a non-woven separator material, composed almost entirely of glass fibres. This absorbs and retains the electrolyte, leaving no free electrolyte in the cell to spill. These Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries (VRLA) have vents, which are one way valves. By maintaining a very small pressure, it converts the oxygen generated at the positive plates back into water. These batteries are perfectly suited to all automotive applications.
