How do I know if I need an alternator or starter motor?

In most cases if the battery charge light has been coming on while driving, this would indicate an issue with the alternator. If your vehicle is having trouble turning over and the battery is in good condition this could indicate an issue with the starter motor. These can be checked by a roadside assistance patrol and where available RACQ Car Electrics can be organised.

Can I get my alternator or starter motor replaced by an authorised workshop?

There are some parts which are simply not practical to replace on the side of the road or it might be more convenient to take the vehicle to a workshop. RACQ also has a service where this can be provided in one of our approved workshops during business hours. These repairers stock the same range of quality parts, all backed with a 2 year / 40,000 km nationwide replacement warranty for private-use vehicles.

  • 2. Rectifier:
    • Fully load tested with "Durst Diode" tester
    • Replaced with OE specification rectifier
  • 3. Rotor:
    • Bench tested for shirt and open circuits
    • Coated in xylene based electrical insulating varnish for re-insulation purposes
  • 4. Stator:
    • Bench tested for shirt and open circuits
    • Coated in xylene based electrical insulating varnish for re-insulation purposes
    • Stator leads re-insulated
  • 5. Slip Ring:
    • Replaced or machined to OE specifications
  • 6. Bearings:
    • Automotive bearings used
    • Fully sealed
    • 100% replaced
  • 7. Pulley:
    • Checked for wear
    • Replaced if needed
  • 8. Threads:
    • Checked and cleaned
  • 9. Regulator:
    • 100% replaced
  • 10. All Units:
    • All units are fully bench and load tested prior to packaging

What makes up a Starter Motor?

    1. Internal Bush:
  • All internal bushes replaced

    2. Front Housing:
  • Checked for stress and measured to OE specifications

    3. Pinion:
  • All pinions replaced with OE or aftermarket product

    4. Clutch:
  • All clutches replaced with OE or aftermarket product

    5. Solenoid:
  • Replaced or rebuilt to OE standard

    6. Planetary Gear:
  • Replaced and re lubricated

    7. Permanent Magnet Field Housing:
  • Magnets are checked for cracks and distortions
  • Housing is cleaned and checked for OE specifications on size

    8. Planetary Gear Cap:
  • Non - stress part reused

    9. Armature:
  • Meg tested for shorts and current leakage

    10. Motor Terminal:
  • Checked and replaced if necessary

    11. Brush Box & Brushes:
  • Brush box is checked for distortion and heat damage and is repaired when necessary for short circuits
  • Brushes replaced

1. How long will I be waiting?
RACQ Car Electrics will, in most cases, have the member's vehicle mobile within 2 hours*. Research has indicated that members with alternator and starter motor failure can wait up to and often more than 24 hours to get their vehicle repaired and back on the road.

2. Where is Car Electrics available?

The Car Electrics mobile service is available in the metropolitan Brisbane and Gold Coast areas.

3. What hours does Car Electrics operate?

The hours of operation vary between Brisbane and the Gold Coast every day of the year for RACQ members.

  • Brisbane operates between 6.30am to 8.30pm seven days
  • Gold Coast operates between 7.30am to 6.30pm seven days

Outside of these hours an appointment job can be booked for the following day.

4. Is Car Electrics competitively priced?

All RACQ Car Electrics units are very competitively priced. Comprehensive research has been conducted to ensure RACQ Car Electrics represent excellent value for money for members.

5. What warranty does Car Electrics offer?

RACQ Car Electrics alternators and starter motors have a 2 year / 40,000 kilometre (whichever comes first) nationwide warranty for a vehicle that is used for private purposes, namely social, domestic or pleasure purposes. There is also a 3 months nationwide warranty for vehicles that are used as a taxi, courier, goods carrier or for commercial purposes.

6. Does Car Electrics offer remanufactured units?

We offer both new and remanufactured units. Remanufactured units are often restored to "as new" specifications and exceed new unit specifications.
