RACQ carbon neutral pledge for entire road service fleet

The Climate Change Challenge

Queenslanders are becoming increasingly aware of, and concerned about, environmental issues, particularly the impact of greenhouse gases. Eight in 10 motorists (79%) are concerned about the effect of motor vehicles on the environment, according to Australian Automobile Association (AAA) research.

As Queensland’s peak motoring organisation, the RACQ is in a unique position to help tackle the climate change challenge by assisting motorists to contribute to a cleaner, greener community.

The RACQ is one of seven motoring clubs that form the AAA, representing a total of 6.5 million members. Together the clubs have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and have developed a national climate change policy.

The policy resolves to:

  • Assist and encourage motorists to reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Ensure that, in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mobility is sustained;
  • Minimise emissions generated by products and services provided to club members; and
  • Participate with governments and industry in developing policies and initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A range of climate change initiatives involving all Australian motoring clubs will be announced in late February.

RACQ takes fleet carbon neutral

The RACQ is taking positive steps to reduce its carbon footprint, pledging its entire road service fleet will “go green” from March 2008 with the introduction of carbon offsets for road service vehicles state-wide.

The Club has purchased carbon credits to offset the total greenhouse gas emissions produced through the delivery of its roadside assistance services in Queensland.  For 2008, RACQ has purchased accredited energy efficiency initiatives.  The choice of carbon credits for 2009 and beyond will be based on outcomes from the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act and any other Federal Government requirements.

The RACQ’s commitment to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of some 700 corporate and contractor vehicles is just one of a range of initiatives being introduced by the Club. RACQ has also commissioned an organisation-wide environmental audit to look at all aspects of its operations and recommend targets and strategies for greenhouse emission reductions.

Specific initiatives for the Club’s members will be introduced progressively.
