There are a number of safety precautions which should be adhered to on any road journey. For instance:
- Wear a properly adjusted and fastened seatbelt at all times. Exemptions apply if you carry a current doctors certificate in the car stating you cannot wear a seatbelt for medical reasons. Such certificates must be produced on request by the police
- Infants and toddlers must be restrained by a suitable approved child restrain that is properly adjusted and fastened unless they are in a taxi where there is no such restraint fitted - in which case they must not sit on the front seat
- Pets must be restrained in the rear of the car to avoid becoming a lethal projectile in a crash (dog harnesses are available from RSPCA)
- Luggage in a station wagon is best stored in the rear compartment behind a cargo barrier
RACQ members who buy a child restraint from RACQs Brisbane Fortitude Valley office will receive assistance and advice regarding fitting the restraint. A mail order service is provided for regional and country members. A telephone advisory service is available on 07 3872 8926 (Brisbane) or 1800 816 523 (for all other Queensland areas).
RACQ Road Service and benefits
Before undertaking a long road trip, you may wish to upgrade your RACQ membership to Plus Care or Ultra Care (phone 13 1905). In the event of a major breakdown these membership services provide additional benefits such as emergency accommodation and the use of a rental car.
