The condition of your vehicle is critical to the success of any driving you undertake. A properly maintained car will not only run better, it will be safer and contribute to a more relaxed, enjoyable journey.
Ensure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition and properly serviced. In particular you should check:
- That the wipers, washers, lights and horn are all working
- Radiator hoses for softening or cracking
- That fuel and temperature gauges are functioning properly
- Fan belts for cracks and tension
- The radiator for corrosion or leaks
- Tyres for uneven wear or poor tread
- That tyres are inflated to the correct pressure
- The exhaust system for leakage or loose parts
- The engine, gearbox and differential for oil leaks
- The braking system for wear and fluid leaks
- The wheel bearings, brakes, lights and coupling mechanisms if you are towing a trailer or caravan (remember to carry a spare tyre for them)
- Carry up-to-date maps of the area you are travelling through
A basic toolkit is also a must, and should include:
- A torch
- Jumper leads
- Jack and wheel brace (ensure the jack works and you can actually undo the wheel nuts if you need to - a solid block of wood is useful under the jack in muddy or soft ground)
- Pliers
- Small and large flat screwdrivers
- A Phillips head screwdriver (No. 2 size)
- An adjustable shifting spanner and basic set of combination and open-ended spanners to suit your vehicle
RACQ Vehicle Inspections
