Itinerary
Day 1 Depart Broome, Geikie Gorge Cruise
Depart Broome and travel to Fitzroy Crossing. This afternoon cruise spectacular Geikie Gorge, discovering the stunning waterway hemmed by limestone walls bleached by annual flooding. Stay: Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy Crossing.
Day 2 Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge
Your first stop is Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre-long natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters under the mountain range to view the oasis. Later in the day, arrive at Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above white sands. Look out for freshwater crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River, which runs through the gorge. Then begin the journey on the famous outback highway, the Gibb River Road, continuing on to our exclusive lodge. Stay: Two Nights: EXCLUSIVE! Day 3 Bell Gorge, Hiking and Swimming
Back on the Gibb River Road, travel to Bell Gorge, where rugged cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Enjoy a swim below the waterfall, go bird-watching or choose from a number of hiking opportunities. This is the perfect place to simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Day 4 Galvans Gorge, Barnett River Gorge
Travel through Kimberley cattle country, discovering secluded gorges. At Galvans Gorge, a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole. At Barnett River Gorge enjoy lunch under the gum trees, look for birdlife and take another dip. Then head for the Mitchell Plateau. Stay: Drysdale River Station, Kalumburu Road.
Day 5 King Edward River, Mitchell Plateau, Aboriginal Art
Today explore Wandjina and Gwion (Bradshaw) rock art galleries and take a swim at King Edward River Crossing. Continue to the Mitchell Plateau. Stay: Two Nights: EXCLUSIVE! Stay in tented cabins with private ensuite bathrooms at Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge.
Day 6 Mitchell Falls, Helicopter Flight over the Falls
Discover the thundering Mitchell Falls, a true highlight of your Kimberley adventure. Where possible we try to secure the services of a local Aboriginal guide to share their knowledge of the region. Begin with a hike to Little Mertens Falls to view rare Aboriginal art. Continue on to Big Mertens Falls before arriving at Mitchell Falls. Swim in the river above the falls, then take a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls back to the vehicle, or alternatively hike back with your guide. Longer flights over the coastline are available at an additional charge.
Day 7 Gibb River Road, El Questro Wilderness Park
Leaving the magnificent Mitchell Plateau, rejoin the Gibb River Road. Ford the Pentecost and Durack rivers, where saltwater crocodiles inhabit the deceptively calm waters. Stay: Two Nights: Tented cabins with private facilities at Emma Gorge Resort, El Questro.
Day 8 Zebedee Springs, Chamberlain Gorge Cruise, Emma Gorge
Today you have the whole day to discover the wonders of El Questro. This morning, walk to beautiful Zebedee Springs. Then, with a local ranger, cruise Chamberlain Gorge, a fresh waterway fringed by tropical vegetation and rugged escarpments, before hiking into Emma Gorge where you can indulge in a refreshing swim.
Day 9 World Heritage Purnululu National Park
Farewell El Questro and journey to Purnululu National Park, a spectacular wilderness region. Travel the Spring Creek Track into the Bungle Bungle Range. Discover the magic of Purnululu for yourself. Hike into Echidna Chasm, a spectacular cleft in the rock massif. Stay: Two Nights: EXCLUSIVE! Stay in tented cabins with hot showers and toilets at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, Purnululu National Park.
Day 10 Cathedral Gorge, Piccaninny Creek
This morning perhaps enjoy an optional helicopter flight (own expense) before journeying to Piccaninny Creek and Cathedral Gorge. Walk among the beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Learn about bushtucker, bush medicine and the area’s significance to local Aboriginals. Enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the Bungle Bungle Range.
Day 11 Kununurra, Ord River Scheme
Travel to Kununurra, home of the Ord River Scheme, one of Australia’s great engineering feats. The scheme was established for irrigation and electricity production. Stay: Kununurra Country Club Resort, Kununurra.
