Shocking spike in drivers running reds: RACQ

A shocking increase in the number of motorists dicing with death and running red lights has been revealed by RACQ, as the Club released the top 10 intersections for the offence.

The data provided to RACQ by Queensland Police showed almost 30,000 drivers were caught running a red light last year, an increase of more than 4000 on the previous year.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the intersection at Leopard Street and Stanley Street at Woolloongabba in Brisbane recorded the highest number of offences with 1,787 people fined.

“Whether you’re in a hurry, or not paying attention, there’s simply no excuse for running a red light,” Ms Ritchie said.

“When someone runs a red, it’s a pedestrian or cyclist that can be caught in the crossfire, and that can end in catastrophe.”

Ms Ritchie said two Gold Coast intersections took out second and third place on the list, with the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Margaret Avenue at Broadbeach the site of more than 1,500 infringements.

“Kumbari Avenue and Smith Street at Southport is third with 1,309 motorists caught running a red light there, but this camera also has one of the highest rates, with one detected in every 1850 vehicles monitored,” she said.

“While most of the sites on the top 10 list are in the south east, 1077 dangerous drivers at a notorious Cairns intersection were also nabbed – landing it in the top five.

“No matter where you are in Queensland, this dangerous behaviour is unacceptable and the penalty will earn you a $400 fine and three demerit points.

“We’ve seen far too many lives lost on Queensland roads this year so during National Road Safety Week this week we’re asking motorists to drive so others survive, and the act of obeying a simple road rule will go a long way to keeping all road users safe.”
