RACQ reveals Gold Coast’s deadliest intersections

23 April 2018 The State’s peak motoring body has revealed the worst intersections for serious crashes in Queensland, with three of the top 10 deadly sites located on the Gold Coast.

Crash frequency data* released by RACQ revealed more than 20 collisions at the worst crash hotspots in the region resulted in 38 casualties from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2017.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael expressed concern the intersection at Clifford Street and Gold Coast Highway/Remembrance Drive was the second most dangerous location in the State and was yet to be allocated any funding to make it safer.

“Twenty people have been seriously hurt at this intersection, mainly because drivers aren’t giving way properly,” Dr Michael said.

“The introduction of a fully controlled right turn, so drivers only turned on green, would go a long way reducing the number of serious crashes.”

Dr Michael called on all levels of governments to research why these crashes had occurred so frequently and said funding should be allocated to the intersections safer.

“We’re asking our politicians to come to the table – at a federal, state and local level they need to step up their game,” she said.

“While the Blackspot Program has been successful in reducing the number of serious crashes in troublesome intersections, continued investment is needed for safer roads.”

Dr Michael reminded drivers it was their responsibility to ensure they entered an intersection safely.

“Crashes like these can be avoided by taking your time, giving way correctly, following at a safe distance and obeying traffic signals and signs.”
