Know where the weather hazards are with a new mobile App

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has launched a new mobile application Queenslanders could use to understand the possible impacts of a natural disaster on their home.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said the ICA’s MyHazards App provided an easy way for households to understand the potential risks of severe weather including storms, cyclones, floods, storm tides and bushfires.

“This app takes publicly available data from government websites and other sources and compiles it in an easy to access format for everyone,” Ms Ross said.

“You simply put your address in the search bar and it immediately gives you a snapshot of the intensity of the possible risk for your location.

“The more we can do to be prepared and mitigate the risks of natural disasters as homeowners the better – that’s why we’re big supporters of this ICA initiative.

“It delivers vital information quickly to your fingertips, so you can make an informed decision about where to buy a home, or what you could do now to reduce the risk of damage if catastrophe strikes.”

Ms Ross said RACQ was encouraged by the Brisbane City Council’s announcement to develop a long-term plan to help the city remain resilient, safe and ready for the effects of cyclones and rising sea levels on coastal suburbs.

“We’re very pleased local government is turning its attention and funding to mitigation measures and preparedness, rather than focusing only on recovery efforts,” she said.

“Working together to identify where communities and homeowners can minimise the impact of severe weather, before it happens, will help keep insurance premiums affordable for those who are most vulnerable.”

MyHazards was available for download from the Apple store, with an Android version currently in development.
