Walk to watch the walk
Spectators have been urged to walk, ride or catch public transport to Currumbin this weekend when the beachside suburb hosted the Commonwealth Games walking events.
RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said thousands would turn out to soak up the atmosphere and watch the free men’s and women’s walk, but warned of road closures and parking restrictions in the area.
“Free events, like the walk, will see an influx of sports lovers on Currumbin so catching public transport will minimise congestion and help spectators avoid the headache of trying to find a park,” Ms Ritchie said.
“Better yet, if you’re local, walk or ride to the foreshore.”
Ms Ritchie said Pacific Parade at the Currumbin beachfront would be closed to traffic today when athletes toured the course and further road closures would come into effect on Sunday.
“There’ll be no access to Durungan Street and Tomewin Street and the surrounding areas will be busy,” she said.
“Don’t expect to snag a park nearby if you do choose to drive.”
“Remember Park ‘n’ Ride services are only available for ticketed spectators.”
