RACQ backs plan to deliver heavy rail relief

RACQ has welcomed the State Government’s announcement of the locations of three new heavy rail stations to be built on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reported new stations would be constructed at Helensvale North, Merrimac and Pimpama Stations, with work on the $120 million projects to commence in 2020/21 and take approximately three years to complete.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Dr Rebecca Michael said the stations would provide improved public transport connectivity in booming areas.

“This kind of planning for the future is critical as we need to ensure there’s adequate public transport cater to the Coast’s growing population,” Dr Michael said.

“These new stations are major steps in the right direction, but it’s also important there are active and public transport options in place for commuters to access them.

“Getting the balance right is key. We also need upgrades to bus services along with infrastructure to support walking, scooting and cycling to and from the stations.”
