Roads closed for hours after massive tree fall
One of Brisbane’s busiest roads will be closed for several hours after a massive tree fell across the street during Monday night’s severe storm, the RACQ warned.
Police have closed Sandgate Road in Ascot between Butler and Lapraik Street with council crews on scene attempting to cut the enormous tree with a chainsaw.
RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said traffic was gridlocked and backed up as far as Toombul shopping centre.
“Diversions are in place, with traffic outbound impacted by lane closures. This is causing extreme headaches for drivers in the morning commute,” Ms Ritchie said.
“Crews are working hard to clear the scene but due to the sheer size of this tree this will take several hours to rectify.”
Ms Ritchie said parents dropping students off at nearby St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School and St Rita’s College was still possible, but delays were likely.
“Police are directing traffic around the incident, but traffic is very heavy along Oriel Street,” she said.
