Start your engines: to help babies sleep?

Ford has revealed a cot for babies that could simulate the noise of a car engine, motion of the vehicle and even street lighting to give the impression of a night-time drive.

The cot, dubbed Max Motor Dreams, is the latest innovation for a growing ‘white noise’ fan base that believe it is the answer to having a restful night’s sleep.

“After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep. But while a quick drive in the family car can work wonders in getting baby off to sleep, the poor old parents still have to be awake and alert at the wheel,” said Max Motor Dreams designer Alejandro López Bravo.

The smart crib can even take on characteristics of your own model of car. The corresponding app can record the sounds and movements of your car and the cot will replicate them.

For now, the Max Motor Dreams is a one-off pilot. But following numerous enquiries, the company is considering putting the unique cot into full‑scale production.

But, as we all know, technology is an ever-changing beast with ‘pink noise’ now being considered as the best way for a good night’s sleep. Whatever the colour, it seems, some sort of continuous noise is comforting for the soul.
