Deliver Cross River Rail as number one priority: RACQ
The State’s peak motoring body has called for Cross River Rail to remain as Queensland’s number one infrastructure priority before any other rail options are considered for the south east.
The Courier Mail has reported Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls has written to the Prime Minister in regards to a potential second State rail project – a high speed train network.
The plan would see a ‘bullet train’ connecting the Gold Coast to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast to Wide Bay.
In a letter to Mr Turnbull, Mr Nicholls and his deputy Deb Frecklington said “the Australian Government’s $20 million Faster Rail Initiative creates an exciting opportunity for southeast Queensland.”
“We seek the Australian Government’s support for business case funding through this initiative for a very fast train linking the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.”
RACQ’s Renee Smith said while new public transport options were always welcome, Cross River Rail needed attention first.
“We urge all Queensland political parties to support Cross River Rail, as they have done over the last five years, as Queensland’s number one priority for Federal funding,” Ms Smith said.
“Cross River Rail is critical in delivering Brisbane commuters with a viable alternative to using their cars and improves existing rail alignment through the inner city.
“It is vital that with our CBD ever-growing, we provide additional capacity at the earliest opportunity.
“We know there is a business case in place for Cross River Rail so it makes sense we are completely focused on delivering a key piece of infrastructure that already has the wheels in motion.”
