Brisbane Metro design revealed

RACQ has called for free and efficient alternatives for commuters no longer able to utilise Victoria Bridge when the project goes ahead.

The new underground station would be built on a State Government parcel of land near the intersection of Grey and Melbourne Streets in South Brisbane but came with a proposal to shut down Victoria Bridge to traffic in favour of buses.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael said the Club only supported the removal of Victoria Bridge traffic if viable free alternatives were provided.

“Almost eleven thousand vehicles use Victoria Bridge every weekday. It is a key strategic river crossing and any displaced traffic will be forced onto already congested sections of the surrounding network,” Dr Michael said.

“Without upgrades, redirecting traffic over William Jolly Bridge to Roma street will cause massive congestion and will take too long for motorists to get to and from West End and the city.”

Dr Michael suggested Brisbane City Council and the State Government approach Transurban to consider offering discounts for travel over the Go Between Bridge.

“The Go Between Bridge is underutilised, and if there are good incentives to use this crossing it will not only help ease congestion around the proposed Metro site but offer a good alternative for drivers,” she said.

Dr Michael said it has been pleasing to see all three levels of government work together to get this much-needed congestion-busting project moving forward and delivering the bus service residents have been calling for.

“We’ve seen the Federal Government allocate $300 million in Budget funding over the next four years, and we look forward to the State to coming to the party, freeing up the two critical parcels of land necessary for the project to proceed.”

Construction on the project was expected to commence in 2019, with services to be running by 2023.
