Gold Coast Light Rail extension opens

Christmas has come early for Gold Coast commuters as the second stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail opened ahead of schedule.

Assistant Tourism Minister Meaghan Scanlon told the Gold Coast Bulletin the official opening would be held on Monday, following a family day on Sunday.

Passengers would enjoy free travel on Sunday from Gold Coast University Hospital to Helensvale station, with three extra stations at Parkwood, Parkwood East and Helensvale connecting tram to train for the first time.

“It is really exciting — we know this piece of infrastructure has been critical for the Gold Coast and a huge economic boost for our community,” Ms Scanlon said.

“It is absolutely critical that we have public transport to relieve the pressure of congestion on our main roads.

“We have the business case now for Stage Three and we’re really excited to see where that goes as well.”

RACQ has previously pushed for the Gold Coast Light Rail to be extended south to Coolangatta and the Airport.
