ASK RACQ: Who gives way when exiting a carpark or driveway?

We’re regularly contacted by members who say they’re frustrated by the number of people who fail to give way correctly.

So we’ve called on RACQ’s road safety experts for a little refresher on the give way rules when exiting a carpark or driveway.

ANSWER: When entering or leaving a road, drivers must give way to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians on the footpath or road.

In both pictures below, vehicle B must give way to vehicle A and the pedestrian before turning.

But what about the image below? Which vehicle must give way in this instance?

ANSWER: The green vehicle must give way to the red vehicle, even though the red vehicle is stopped at a stop sign. This is because cars entering and exiting from a driveway must give way to cars already on the road.
