Cairns recorded its wettest day since 2015 on Wednesday, with 320 millimetres falling in just 24 hours in Babinda, 208mm at Gordonvale and 182mm at Cairns Airport. The deluge resulted in flooding of local creeks.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said extensive rainfall had led to several road closures.

“Heavy rains can cause severe damage to the road network,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Rain is predicted for Cairns for much of next week so we’re warning motorists more roads could close over the next few days.

“Plan your journey, listen to the warnings and never, ever attempt to enter floodwaters. It’s simply not worth the risk to your life and the lives of emergency service personnel who have to rescue you.”
