Queensland the most flood prone State in the country

RACQ has called for proactive flood mitigation after it was revealed 16 of Australia’s top 20 most flood-affected electorates were in Queensland.

New Insurance Council Australia (ICA) data revealed the electorate of Herbert, which included Townsville, had topped the list with 55,460 exposed land parcels.

RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner, who was in Townsville on Wednesday, said the data enforced the need for Queensland, more than any other State, to be aware of the risks and proactive about mitigation.

“Townsville is only at the beginning of its recovery following the recent devastating floods, with total insurance losses of more than $1 billion and this research shows it could be only a matter of time before the city is hit again,” Mr Turner said.

“We’ve pushed for all levels of government, as well as property developers, builders, insurers and the community to work together and work smarter on flood mitigation.

“There needs to be greater mitigation investment and a coordinated approach, with cross analysis and access to data, better building codes and smarter planning.

“For example, not building on flood plains would also be a good start.”

Mr Turner said RACQ supported the ICA’s call for implementation of the Productivity Commission’s recommendation for $200 million a year in mitigation and resilience, matched by the State Government.

“We’re ready and willing to work with all levels of government on this,” he said.

“It’s typically the property owners with the highest risks that face the highest premiums, so if government wants people to live in these regions, the issue needs to be taken more seriously.

“We urge all Queenslanders to have a good look at this data and consider it seriously when deciding where to purchase or build their home.”

The top 5 electorates (by the number of land parcels exposed):
1. Herbert (QLD) 55,460
2. Kennedy (QLD) 35,284
3. Maranoa (QLD) 31,452
4. Blair (QLD) 27,310
5. Flynn (QLD) 26,560
Brisbane has come in at number 11 on the list with 24,603 exposed parcels.
