Community weighs in on GC light rail extension

Community groups and the Gold Coast City Council have commenced a debate on the route options for the next stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail.

Gold Coast Bulletin reported Mayor Tom Tate declared council’s preference was for light rail to continue south along the Gold Coast Highway through Burleigh and Palm Beach before it connected to Gold Coast Airport.

About 1500 petitioners and Burleigh MP Michael Hart called for the extension to turn west at West Burleigh Road and link with the train station at Varsity Lakes.

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the Club supported the extension of the light rail line towards Coolangatta and the pros and cons of all options to connect to the airport should be considered.

“There’s a fair way to go before a decision on this is made so we need to make sure all options are looked at,” Ms Smith said.

“It’s important for locals to be properly consulted so we get the best outcome.

“A connection to the Gold Coast Airport would give locals more public transport options and relieve traffic on both the M1 and Gold Coast Highway.”

A business case for the third stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail was currently being completed by council.
