Dramatic rescue: one boat burns, another overturns
Fourteen people have been rescued from the water off Gladstone, in a dramatic scene where one boat caught fire, and a second overturned.
On Monday morning RACQ Capricorn Rescue and RACQ LifeFlight Rescue were tasked to the scene of a vessel fire, 25km east of Curtis Island, where 14 people had abandoned ship and transferred the boat’s tender, which subsequently overturned, before they were left wading in the water.
An RACQ Capricorn Rescue crewman was winched into the water to retrieve one patient, aged in their 70’s, who was suspected to be suffering hypothermia. The patient was then transported to Gladstone Hospital.
The Gladstone Police vessel retrieved the remaining 13 people in the water.
