Bus strikes to cause Friday peak hour headache

Commuters heading home on Friday should expect significant delays out of the CBD, with further bus strikes to hit during the afternoon peak hour.

Courier Mail has reported bus drivers would continue to take industrial action this week refusing to collect fares on Thursday and striking between 2pm and 6pm on Friday.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said commuters needed to prepare for disruptions and should start to make alternative transport arrangements now.

“A Friday afternoon strike will hit commuters hard, especially those trying to get out of the CBD and for students trying to get home,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Start planning ahead now and make arrangements to see whether there’s another method of transport to get you home, or whether you can leave early or head home later to avoid getting stuck.”

A TransLink spokesperson said it was working with Brisbane City Council (BCC) to minimise impacts.

“Unfortunately, TransLink’s Journey Planner will not have up-to-date BCC bus information. Customers can call 13 12 30 for the latest information,” the spokesperson said.

“All other bus transport providers and all other modes will operate as normal.

“This is a dispute between BCC and its workforce. TransLink is not involved in the union negotiations and strongly encourages both parties to reach an agreement to avoid further disruptions to Brisbane commuters.”
