Don’t be a fool – evacuate if necessary
Residents living in the path of Cyclone Debbie are being urged not to be fools – and evacuate if advised to do so.
The Burdekin Shire Council has warned residents who ignore evacuation advice they would not receive help from emergency services during the height of the storm, as reported in The Townsville Bulletin.
Police-enacted evacuation notices have been issued to those living in parts of the Burdekin, Whitsunday and Townsville regions and Police and State Emergency Service personnel doorknocked homes yesterday to ensure the message was received.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a four-metre water surge could hit low lying coastal areas tomorrow, if Cyclone Debbie’s arrival coincided with a king tide. Water surges carried enough power to wash away homes.
Evacuation sites have been established in parts of north Queensland and included the Ayr Showground.
