Man winched after motorbike crash

A man has been winched to safety by the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew, after he was injured when he crashed his dirt bike in a remote forest near Gympie on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred when the man tried to navigate a steep downhill track, fell forward over the handlebars and crashed.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called at 2.30pm but, due to thick tree coverage, the aircraft was unable to land at the scene, so it set down in a nearby, cleared area of forest.

An onboard Critical Care Doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service Flight Paramedic were then driven by a forestry worker in a four-wheel-drive, to the crash site, where they assessed and treated the patient.

Once the man was stabilised and strapped in the stretcher, the chopper returned to the crash location and winched the injured man and medical team aboard.

The patient was then flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, for further assessment and treatment.
