Roundabouts to be replaced in Cairns CBD

The State’s peak motoring body has supported a decision to remove a series of roundabouts in the Cairns CBD and replace them with traffic lights.

Cairns Post reported as part of a $10.5 million upgrade of Florence Street, the existing roundabouts at Abbott and Lake Streets would be converted to signalised intersections.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Dr Rebecca Michael said the improvement would make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road and reduce the risk of crashes.

“The existing roundabouts don’t offer the safest opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road, so there’s a greater risk of collisions that can result in serious injury and even fatalities,” Dr Michael said.

“We welcome the safety upgrade and believe the changes will complement the speed reduction to 40km/h put in place across the CBD earlier this year.”
