No-go on expanded school zone times

RACQ has not supported a proposal to extend school zone times for 12 hours saying it would not be appropriate for all areas.

The Courier Mail reported The Greens announced an election pledge to trial extended school zone times between 7am and 7pm seven days a week.

Club spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said while some schools already operated with extended school zone times, it should not be a blanket rule for all.

“Some schools in Queensland already have all day school zones due to their specific requirements,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Generally, you find all day school zones at split-campus schools where children may need to cross the road throughout the day, however, at most schools children won’t be near the road outside of drop off and pick up times.”

Ms Ritchie reminded drivers from today reduced speed limits were in place between 7- 9am and 2-4pm on school days in most council areas.

“Roads around schools will be busy again from today with students walking or being dropped off and picked up, which is why it’s so important to watch your speed,” she said.

“The reduced 40km/h speed limits are in place for a reason – to protect children who are vulnerable and sometimes unpredictable.

“We can all do our bit to make the roads safer around schools by slowing down.”
