Be aware of Gold Coast Marathon road closures: RACQ

Ahead of this weekend’s Gold Coast Marathon event, the State’s peak motoring body has reminded motorists to be wary of changes to traffic conditions.

More than 30,000 people would brave an early alarm on both Saturday and Sunday, before pounding the pavement over a variety of distances between Paradise Point and Burleigh Heads.

RACQ’s Lucinda Ross said it was important anyone driving on the Coast this weekend allowed themselves plenty of time to complete their journey.

“Traffic will be anything but normal over the next two days as the Coast swells with tens of thousands of people for the Marathon – and to top it off, it’s the start of the school holidays,” Ms Ross said.

“We’re urging motorists to plan their trips ahead of time to allow for delays and diversions around road closures, and to consider public transport as an alternative where they can.”

Races over the two-day event started and finished at the Southport Broadwater Parklands. The route for Sunday’s marathon was an out-and-back course, extending to the Esplanade at Burleigh Heads.

“To give yourself the best chance of getting around this weekend, it’s best to avoid the route as much as possible, and give yourself a little more time for any trips you make,” Ms Ross said.

“Police will be opening roads progressively each day, so the best way to stay informed is by checking RACQ’s road conditions.”
