RACQ chopper winches marooned boatie

A patient has been winched by RACQ Capricorn Rescue from a stranded vessel after it became marooned on the reef near Heron Island during low tide.

The crew was first tasked to investigate at 1am Thursday after an EBIRB device was activated from the 21 foot boat, but due to low light it was forced to wait until morning before a crewman could board.

Unable to establish communications with the passenger, an RACQ Capricorn Rescue crewman was winched down to the vessel where he discovered a person in need of medical assistance.

An intensive care paramedic treated the person, who was then winched to safety, assessed at Heron Island by the resident nurse and then transported to Rockhampton Hospital.
