'Appy days

Free apps to make the most of your next road trip.

No matter your destination, planning is an integral part of the road trip experience.

Apps can take the stress out of planning, help you stick to your budget and ensure you do and see everything on your wish list.

Maps.me

Download Maps.me if you’re heading off-road, don’t want to use your mobile data, or are concerned that you may lose mobile phone reception on your road trip.

Maps.me provides offline access to maps and navigation options so you can plan your days’ drive without using mobile data.

The app also includes points of interest, hiking trails, restaurants, ATMs and public transport options.

National Public Toilet Map

There’s nothing worse than needing to use the toilet when there are no facilities nearby. Save yourself from squatting by the side of the road with the Australian Government Department of Health’s National Public Toilet Map app.

Search by location for directions to one of the 18,000 listed public toilets across Australia.

You can also search by feature such as wheelchair accessibility, opening hours and baby change facilities.

Fuel map

Never run out of fuel again with Fuel Map, a crowd-sourced database of petrol stations across Australia.

You can add the fuel prices at petrol stations you visit to help other travellers find the best prices.

If you’re travelling in Queensland, find the cheapest petrol with the RACQ’s Fair Fuel app

Wikicamps Australia

Whether you’re going camping for the weekend or planning an extended road trip, Wikicamps Australia will ensure you have all the information.

Wikicamps provides offline information on campgrounds, caravan parks, backpacker hostels, dump points, rest areas and points of interest.

You can find out which facilities all campgrounds in the area offer, including whether they are pet-friendly, have mobile phone reception or are disability accessible.

The site filters narrow down results to only show locations that meet your needs. For example, a rest area that has toilets, drinking water and power available.

PackPoint

PackPoint is useful if you find yourself forgetting to pack items or just aren’t sure what to pack on your next road trip.

The app helps to organise what you need to pack based on the length and type of travel, how often you plan to do laundry, the weather at your destination and any activities planned during your trip.
