Avoid jingle hell

Ensure your home isn’t a target for criminals this festive season.

Holidays are one of the most joyous aspects of the festive season, but an empty unsecured home can be a gift for burglars.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said in the excitement of planning, packing and finishing work for the year people often overlooked simple safety precautions that could protect their home and belongings.

“There is so much to think about as you pack and head away over the Christmas period, that unfortunately home security can often be forgotten,” Ms Ross said.

“It may only take a few minutes, but it could save you a lot of heartache if it prevents a break in.”

Follow these simple steps to keep your home secure while you’re away.

  • Deadlock doors and windows including balcony and garage doors.
  • Lock your shed, pet doors and any side access gates.
  • Remove items that can be climbed on to access second storey balconies and windows such as slippery slides and lattices.
  • Don’t leave a message on your answering machine telling callers you’ll be away.
  • Avoid posting about your holiday plans on social media.
  • Store easy to carry valuables such as laptops, jewellery and cash out of sight.
  • Consider installing a safe.
  • Ask trusted neighbours, family or friends to regularly clear your letterbox, mow your lawn or park in your driveway to make your home look inhabited.
  • Put away bicycles, barbecues tools and other expensive outdoor items.
  • Consider a timer on lights or a radio to give your home the appearance someone is home.
  • Check your home and contents insurance is up to date.
