Birdsville calls for volunteers
Spend a weekend volunteering at the iconic Birdsville Races in the heart of Australia.
Thousands of Queenslanders are gearing up for the 137th iconic Birdsville Races from 6-7 September 2019.
Known as ‘The Melbourne Cup of the Outback’, the bucket-list event presents a unique opportunity to give back to the community while experiencing the heartland of Australia.
Along with domestic and international visitors, volunteers of all ages travel thousands of kilometres to Birdsville each year to help deliver the two-day event which is jam-packed with outback entertainment and activities.
Birdsville Race Club Vice President Gary Brook said much of the appeal of the Birdsville Races come from the sense of community which overtakes the tiny outback town.
“There’s no better way to experience it than to get involved behind-the-scenes as one of our valued volunteers,” Mr Brook said.
“The races are steeped more than a century in tradition, and it’s amazing to see volunteers old and new make the trip out to Birdsville each year to keep the event alive for further generations of Australian and international travellers and punters.”
Mr Brook said while many volunteers trek to the Races to help as part of a group, solo volunteers can be sure they’ll leave with loads of new friendships and experiences to remember.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, you’ll be welcomed with open arms into the event team and the broader Birdsville Races community,” he said.
Volunteer registrations are now live and all volunteers must be aged 18 or older.
