Rear-end crashes are the most common crashes across Queensland and can be costly for all parties involved due to injury and insurance claims.
Around one in three claims to the Queensland CTP insurance scheme are related to rear-end crashes, equating to 25% of the total amount paid.
Between 2000-2009, the social costs associated with rear-end crashes amounted to $1.7 billion across Queensland, with almost $600 million in costs for Brisbane City alone.
Unfortunately, researchers found rear-end crashes are seldom talked about as they result in less fatalities and serious injuries.
That is not to say they don’t cause injuries, with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MTAC) reporting that conditions such as whiplash can have an ongoing impact on the health and wellbeing of those involved.
Research from MAIC and the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland (CARRS-Q) found that as many as two-thirds of drivers are not keeping the recommended following distance (two seconds) and have urged all drivers to Be a Mate and don’t tailgate.
RACQ’s Kirsty Clinton said many of the injuries and subsequent insurance claims could have been avoided if drivers left a safe, two second following distance.
“While often these nose-to-tail type crashes only result in minor damage to vehicles, they can cause injuries with long-lasting impacts like whiplash,” Ms Clinton said.
“People need to make sure they’re always travelling at a safe distance behind the vehicle in front – a minimum of two seconds.
“This will ensure they have enough time and space to avoid a crash if the vehicle in front is forced to suddenly stop.”
