Film Review: Zombieland: Double Tap

Synopsis:

Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock face off against evolved zombies, survivors and hippies in post-apocalyptic America.

Our Review:

After a 10-year hiatus, the gang from Zombieland is back on the big screen to the delight of fans and series newcomers.

More comedy than horror, Zombieland: Double Tap picks off where the original left off with Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) facing off against the undead and in search of a forever home.

The makeshift family take over the now dilapidated White House and all is well until Little Rock runs away to find other survivors closer to her age.

The remaining ensemble band together to bring Little Rock (who has now shacked up with a new love interest and is living in a hippie commune) home.

Fans of the original will find much to love about the sequel with the banter between the four main characters as strong as ever.

All the elements that made the first Zombieland a success are present with clever and fun kills, humour, heart, new rules and even more creative zombies.

Harrelson deserves special mention for his comedic prowess. He’s exuberant, fun, foolhardy and plays well against Eisenberg’s neurotic and somewhat nerdy character.

Series newcomer Zoey Deutch is a welcome addition to the franchise with her performance as the dim-witted, yet loveable, sorority girl Maddison. Scenes in which a love triangle develops between Maddison, Wichita and Columbus are among the funniest of the film.

Director Ruben Fleischer returns after his directorial work on the critically panned Venom (read our review). It seems returning to a franchise he is familiar with was a wise choice as the filmmaker makes zombies fun again.

Zombieland: Double Tap doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s a worthy follow up and much-needed, light-hearted take on the genre that has been done to death in recent years. If you’re after a film to watch this Halloween, Zombieland: Double Tap is it.

Final Verdict: 3.5/5 stars.
