Film review: Men in Black International
Synopsis:The Men in Black have protected the Earth from alien invasion for years and now they must face their biggest threat –a mole in their organisation.
The latest instalment in the Men in Black (MIB) franchise has series newcomers Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson taking over the reins from mainstays Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
Fresh off their collaboration in Thor Ragnarök and Avengers: Endgame, the paring of Hemsworth and Thompson is a strong one, with the duo riffing off each other with ease.
Unfortunately, that’s about all the new imagining has going for it, and even their riffing doesn’t quite match the comedic heights set in the Marvel films.
Nor does the pairing match that of Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and later Josh Brolin who portrayed a young Jones in MIB 3.
Where the previous films played the older mentor and cocky newcomer archetypes to perfection, the latest instalment feels like the blander understudy.
The ingredients for a successful MIB film are all there with likeable leads, action, charm, intrigue and special effects but the recipe is just off.
That’s not to say the film isn’t watchable, it certainly is, it’s just middle of the road and feels safe in almost every way.
Plot wise, MIB: International is nothing new - bad guys want to destroy the earth and it’s up to the MIB to stop them and find out who inside their own organisation is working against them.
The big reveal will have audiences letting out a collective ‘duh’, as the ending was signposted throughout the trailers and the entirety of the film.
The final battle is by far the weakest in MIB franchise history and does little to end the film on a high.
If you’re a fan of the franchise, or Hemsworth and Thompson, you’ll find something to enjoy in the latest outing, otherwise wait for it to become available on a streaming service.
Final verdict: 3/5
