Fraser Island Great Walk is picture-perfect
Hiking holiday snap nominated for 150 Must-Do’s in Queensland competition.
Avid hiker and RACQ member Neil Pattemore was captured in this special moment during a multi-day hike on Fraser Island.
The photo was taken at sunrise, after an overnight stop, on the banks of Lake McKenzie, and is an entrant in RACQ’s 150 Must-Do’s in Queensland competition.
“There was no one else in the campsite so we took the pic and had a swim,” Neil said.
“It was pretty cool. When no one else is around it’s kind of nice to have a swim.”
The Fraser Island trail is one of Queensland’s Great Walks – a series of multi-day hikes, ranging from two to eight days, which showcase the natural beauty of our state.
“The Great Walks have marked trails but you have to take a tent and all your food,” Neil said.
“There are no cabins and no food on the way, so what you start with is all you’ve got for an 80 or 90k walk.”
The K’Gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk covers 90km, from Dilli Village to Happy Valley, and takes six to eight days to complete.
Hiking is a passion for Neil which he now shares with his children Brei, 15, Bec, 13, and Josh, 12.
“They love it. It is a great activity to do with kids, it’s magic,” Neil said.
“We always do hikes on our trips, wherever we go, or we might make it a special hiking trip.”
Last year Neil, his wife Sarah and the three kids travelled to New Zealand and included several multi-day hikes as part of the trip.
This year the Tarragindi family is planning a holiday to Cairns while Neil’s next big hiking adventure is planned for the Blue Mountains with Brei.
