Giant 1kg doughnut worth the weight for Brisbane couple
Kenilworth bakery’s famous treat too much for ‘sweet tooth’ to resist
Being married to a baker, Alex Jell knows a thing or two about sweet treats.
So, when he gives high praise for Kenilworth Country Bakery’s giant cream doughnuts, you can be assured they are good.
Alex submitted this photo of one of the bakery’s 1kg doughnuts as an entry in RACQ’s 150 Must-Do’s in Queensland competition which closes at 5pm, 19 July.
The RACQ member from Brisbane and his wife Louise, a wholesale baker, had heard about the 1kg doughnut and were eager to try it.
“We went up there about six months ago with the intention of doing a bush walk and getting a doughnut after, but by the time we finished the hike and got to the bakery it had closed,” Alex said.
“This time (but six weeks ago) we made sure we got to the bakery first, got the doughnut and did the hike afterwards.
“They have a huge selection of doughnuts but they are renowned for their 1kg cream doughnuts.
“They only make a certain number of the 1kg doughnuts each day, so it’s first in, best dressed.”
The bakery offers an eating challenge for anyone brave enough to attempt getting through a 1kg doughnut in one sitting.
If you do, you get the doughnut for free and a signed plate which you can hang on the bakery’s wall of fame. The doughnuts cost $20 and there is a selection of flavours available.
Some of the more standard doughnuts available at Kenilworth Country Bakery.
Anyone eager to tackle the 1kg challenge should put in their order online.
Alex said he could not have finished the doughnut on his own but managed to get through it with the help of Louise over the course of the day which included hiking and sightseeing.
“If I sat down and tried to eat it in one go, I wouldn’t go too well,” he said.
“We had a bit before the hike and a bit after and while we were touring around the area for the rest of the day. It kept us going.”
Alex said he regularly visited the region as it was a great hiking destination.
The area is home to two of Queensland’s series of Great Walks – the Conondale Range and Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walks.
The Conondale Range Great Walk offers half-day journeys through to the full four-day 56km route.
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk is 58.8km in total length but offers different access points to the route, allowing for half or full-day walks.
